I found it very important to understand the need of dominated groups to talk about their being dominated, i.e. acknowledge the authority of groups to speak about their own problems. That means that privileged groups should not steal the narratives of the “subaltern”, of the dominated groups. At the same time, it is necessary to pay attention to who is the one who asks the questions and who is supposed to answer and give explanations every time. Usually, the case is that the dominating group demands for information and replies from the “other”.
The reflection on transcultural teams has been a difficult, but necessary, exercise in our working group. Otherwise, how could we really dig and work on transcultural questions – including racism, power positions, (dis)advantages – if the group had not experienced a situation of conflict and did not have the chance to constructively face and solve it? Even though it has been harsh, it was a deep, intense and very meaningful exercise. For we do not work on transcultural teams if we constantly avoid conflicts based on personal positioning and experienced memories.
