Unfortunately, not enough volunteers came together, so we had to postpone the construction days until next spring :-/
In spring 2025, the time had finally come: with the notary appointment, the purchase of Casa inDIpendenza in Valle Cannobina in northern Italy was completed. This has created a new non-commercial, commons-oriented place for regeneration, education, politics and culture. A working group from the Berlin-based association solar e.V. spent three years working on the project, searching for a suitable property, fundraising and creating the legal conditions for the project to be established. Numerous contacts were made in the small mountain village of Gurro and the surrounding region, and supporters and friends of the project were found in Italy and Germany. Between 2023 and 2025, an annual seminar was also held there.
The house is in a solid condition, but there is also some renovation work to be done due to prolonged vacancy and an uncertain future. The traditional natural stone roof is in need of fundamental maintenance and refurbishment, and the sanitary facilities also need to be renovated soon.
In addition, the house lacks a solid heating system that would make it comfortable to stay there even in the colder seasons high up in the mountains. To this end, we already procured the large parts for the construction of a heating system in four to five rooms in the spring. These are now to be installed in a DIY workshop in October 2025. In addition, smaller woodworking tasks are to be completed.
Heating system construction workshop:
Would you like to help build a small heating system? Whether you already have some knowledge or even professional expertise in heating system construction, or would like to learn how to solder copper pipes, install pipes and install control technology, we would love to have your help!
The starting point: We have a water-bearing kitchen stove, a 300-litre storage tank, 3 radiators and some used installation and pipe materials.
The goal: Within approximately 5 days, the basic pipes and radiators should be installed, the storage tank connected and, as far as possible, the control technology connected.
The approach: We want to create an atmosphere that is as non-hierarchical and appreciative as possible, in which we share knowledge with each other, treat each other in a gender-sensitive and anti-racist manner, and where there is also plenty of time for relaxation and leisure. We want everyone to participate in the reproductive tasks as much as possible.
Do you have other skills and interests and would like to get involved in the construction days? Then please get in touch with us.
Key dates at a glance:
Arrival by 6 October
Departure by 11 October
Accommodation and meals provided by us (organised jointly)
The daily construction time should not exceed 5 hours in order to allow time for relaxation. Previous craftsmanship experience is beneficial but not essential.
Travelling from Germany: The best route is via Locarno (Switzerland) to Cannobio and then on to the village (morning and afternoon).
The workshop will take place if a group of 4 to 10 people can be formed.
